Tax Season Shenanigans: Part I (Topanga)

I haven’t posted in a while…I’m in San Francisco for a couture sewing workshop. I’m staying at an AirBnB, which reminds me that I haven’t written about my tax season shenanigans at an AirBnB in Topanga.

At the end of March, I had a great weekend in Topanga, at a hippie hideaway I found on AirBnB. It was nice to spend part of the weekend near the ocean.

The first night we stayed in the Mermaid Suite. I had asked my friend to book the Creative Suite, and, on accident, we got the Mermaid Suite. The second night was spent in the Creative Suite.

The AirBnB description says something like, “David, founder of this community enjoys working with essential oils…” Of course, he does.

The place looked like child’s playhouse…the wood and other materials were patched together. The multi-colored paint job was unfinished in parts. There was a second floor loft. It had a slanted roof, and a door was used as a window, opening into the bathroom. There was a makeshift mandala on the bathroom door…so you can meditate while doing your business.

To be honest, I was afraid to go to sleep. I felt itchy in the bed linens. There were bugs everywhere. The place was super dusty. In the morning, all the windows and doors were closed, but, out of nowhere, a bird flew in.

There was no privacy, at all. We could hear the neighbors fucking. I turned the shower on, and said something about the water being cold. Then, I heard a girl yell, “Oh, you might want to wait. We just changed the gas tank for the water heater.” Nice.

Other than all of that, overall, it was pretty quiet, which is exactly what I needed.

Nearby, there’s a Mexican restaurant called Abuelitas. It was a delight. However, the waitresses appeared not to really give a shit about doing their fucking jobs. If you can deal with that small inconvenience, the food is really great.

If you need a getaway, even if you live in L.A., I recommend Topanga. I feel everyone should stay in this place, just to say they did it. It’s just so quiet and beautiful. Steer clear of the Mermaid Suite. Out of the two, The Creative Suite is the way to go. But, there are other “cottages” on the property. These were the options in our price range. I’d love to make a trip there next year, just to remind myself of this adventure.
